Convert between improper fractions and mixed numbers, and perform arithmetic on mixed numbers.

Mixed Numbers and Improper Fractions

A mixed number has a whole part and a fraction part (e.g., 3 1/2). An improper fraction has a numerator larger than its denominator (e.g., 7/2). To convert a mixed number to an improper fraction: multiply the whole number by the denominator and add the numerator.

Arithmetic with Mixed Numbers

To perform operations on mixed numbers, first convert them to improper fractions. Then apply the standard fraction rules: find common denominators for addition/subtraction, or multiply/divide directly. Finally, simplify and convert back to a mixed number if desired.
