How Musical Intervals Work
A musical interval is the distance between two pitches measured in semitones. There are 12 semitones in an octave, each corresponding to a named interval from unison to major 7th.
Intervals are classified by their consonance or dissonance. Perfect consonances (unison, 4th, 5th) sound stable, while dissonances (minor 2nd, major 7th, tritone) create tension that resolves to consonances.
