What Is Prime Factorization?
Prime factorization is the process of breaking down a composite number into a product of prime numbers. Every integer greater than 1 has a unique prime factorization (Fundamental Theorem of Arithmetic). For example, 60 = 2² × 3 × 5.
Uses of Prime Factorization
Prime factorization is used to find GCF and LCM, simplify fractions, and is fundamental to cryptography (RSA encryption relies on the difficulty of factoring large numbers). It also helps in determining the number of divisors a number has.
