What Is A1C?
A1C (glycated hemoglobin) measures the average blood sugar level over the past 2-3 months. It reflects the percentage of hemoglobin proteins coated with sugar. An A1C below 5.7% is normal, 5.7-6.4% indicates prediabetes, and 6.5% or higher indicates diabetes.
The Conversion Formula
The estimated average glucose (eAG) formula is: eAG (mg/dL) = 28.7 × A1C − 46.7. This was derived from the A1C-Derived Average Glucose (ADAG) study, which showed a strong correlation between A1C and average glucose measurements.
