HomeConstruction & HomeAC Tonnage Calculator

❄️ AC Tonnage Calculator

Calculate the right air conditioner size in tons for your room or home. Rule of thumb: 1 ton per 500 sq ft.

How to Calculate AC Tonnage

The general rule is 1 ton of cooling per 500 sq ft (or 20 BTU per sq ft). One ton of air conditioning equals 12,000 BTU/hr. Hotter climates need more capacity (up to 30 BTU/sq ft), while cooler climates need less (15 BTU/sq ft). High ceilings, large windows, and poor insulation increase the requirement.

AC Sizing Considerations

An oversized AC cycles on and off frequently, leading to poor humidity control and higher energy bills. An undersized unit runs constantly and cannot maintain comfort. For an accurate Manual J load calculation, consult an HVAC professional. AC units are available in 1.5, 2, 2.5, 3, 3.5, 4, and 5 ton sizes.
