🛣️ Asphalt Calculator

Calculate how many tons of asphalt you need based on area and thickness. Uses standard density of 145 lbs per cubic foot.

How to Calculate Asphalt Tonnage

To calculate asphalt needed: multiply the area (length × width in feet) by the thickness in feet, then multiply by the density of hot mix asphalt (145 lbs/cu ft). Divide by 2,000 to convert to tons. A standard driveway uses 2–3 inches of asphalt, while parking lots typically require 3–4 inches.

Asphalt Coverage Tips

One ton of asphalt covers approximately 80 sq ft at 2 inches thick, or about 53 sq ft at 3 inches thick. Order 5–10% extra to account for compaction and waste. The density of 145 lbs per cubic foot is standard for hot mix asphalt (HMA).
