According to the American Heart Association, blood pressure is categorized as: Normal (less than 120/80), Elevated (120-129/less than 80), Stage 1 Hypertension (130-139/80-89), Stage 2 Hypertension (140+/90+), and Hypertensive Crisis (higher than 180/120).
How to Read Blood Pressure
Blood pressure is measured in millimeters of mercury (mmHg) and written as two numbers. Systolic (top number) measures pressure when the heart beats. Diastolic (bottom number) measures pressure when the heart rests between beats.
