Calculate the correct current-limiting resistor for your LED circuit using R = (Vsource - Vforward) / I.

Why LEDs Need Current-Limiting Resistors

LEDs are current-driven devices with very low internal resistance. Without a resistor, the current through the LED would be excessive, destroying it almost instantly. The resistor formula R = (Vsource - Vforward) / I ensures the LED receives the correct operating current.

Typical LED forward voltages range from 1.5V for infrared to 3.4V for UV LEDs. Standard indicator LEDs operate at around 20mA. Always check your LED datasheet for exact specifications.
