🪵 Plywood Calculator
Calculate the number of 4×8 plywood sheets needed to cover an area, with waste factor.
How to Calculate Plywood Sheets
A standard plywood sheet is 4 feet × 8 feet = 32 square feet. Divide your total area by 32 and round up. Add 10% for waste on simple rectangular projects, or 15% for more complex layouts with many cuts. Common thicknesses are 1/4″, 3/8″, 1/2″, 5/8″, and 3/4″.
Plywood Buying Tips
For roof sheathing, use 1/2″ or 5/8″ CDX plywood. For subfloors, 3/4″ tongue-and-groove is standard. For cabinets and furniture, use 3/4″ birch or maple plywood. Always buy an extra sheet or two beyond your calculated amount for mistakes.
