Ramp Calculator

Calculate ramp length from rise and slope ratio. ADA-compliant ramps require a 1:12 slope (1 inch rise per 12 inches run).

ADA Ramp Slope Requirements

The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) requires a maximum slope of 1:12 for wheelchair ramps — meaning 1 inch of rise for every 12 inches of horizontal run. For a 30-inch rise, you need at least 30 feet of ramp length. Ramps longer than 30 feet require a landing (5 ft minimum) every 30 feet of run.

Ramp Design Guidelines

ADA ramps must be at least 36 inches wide (48 inches preferred). Handrails are required on both sides when the rise exceeds 6 inches. The top and bottom landings must be at least 60 inches long. A slope gentler than 1:12 (such as 1:16 or 1:20) is easier to navigate and recommended where space allows.
