How to Solve Proportions
A proportion states that two ratios are equal: A/B = C/D. To find the missing value D, cross-multiply: D = (B × C) / A. Proportions are used in scaling recipes, map reading, unit conversion, and similar triangle problems.
Simplifying Ratios
To simplify a ratio, divide both numbers by their greatest common divisor (GCD). For example, 12:8 simplifies to 3:2 because the GCD of 12 and 8 is 4.
