How to Calculate Sand Needed
Measure the area in square feet and the desired depth in inches. Convert to cubic feet by multiplying area by depth divided by 12, then divide by 27 to get cubic yards. Sand weighs approximately 1.35 tons per cubic yard (dry). For paver bases, 1-2 inches of sand is typical.
