Determine the correct wire gauge (AWG) based on amperage, distance, and maximum acceptable voltage drop per NEC guidelines.
How to Choose the Right Wire Size
Wire sizing must satisfy two criteria: ampacity (the maximum current a wire can safely carry without overheating) and voltage drop (keeping the drop within NEC recommendations). The larger wire gauge that satisfies both requirements should be used.
The NEC recommends a maximum 3% voltage drop for branch circuits. For long runs, voltage drop often requires a larger wire than ampacity alone would dictate. Always consult local codes and a licensed electrician for actual installations.
