Calculate the full-frame equivalent focal length and aperture for cropped sensor cameras.
Understanding Crop Factor
Crop factor describes how much smaller a camera sensor is compared to a full-frame (35mm) sensor. The equivalent focal length equals the actual focal length multiplied by the crop factor. A 35mm lens on an APS-C camera (1.5× crop) gives a field of view equivalent to a 52.5mm lens on full frame.
Common Sensor Crop Factors
Full frame: 1.0×. APS-C (Nikon, Sony, Fuji): 1.5×. APS-C (Canon): 1.6×. Micro Four Thirds (Olympus, Panasonic): 2.0×. 1-inch sensors: 2.7×. The equivalent aperture (for depth of field comparison) is also multiplied by the crop factor, so f/2.8 on Micro 4/3 gives similar DoF to f/5.6 on full frame.
