⏱️ Shutter Speed Calculator

Calculate minimum handheld shutter speed using the reciprocal rule, and ND filter exposure adjustments.

The Reciprocal Rule

The reciprocal rule states that the minimum handheld shutter speed should be 1 divided by the effective focal length (focal length × crop factor). For a 50mm lens on a full-frame camera, you need at least 1/50s. On an APS-C body (1.5× crop), you need 1/75s. Image stabilization can allow 2-5 stops slower.

ND Filter Calculations

Neutral density filters reduce light by a number of stops. Each stop doubles the exposure time. An ND3 (3-stop) filter turns 1/250s into 1/30s. A 10-stop ND filter turns 1/250s into about 4 seconds, enabling long exposures in daylight.
