How EV Range Is Calculated
Electric vehicle range depends on the usable battery capacity and the vehicle's energy consumption rate. The formula is: Range = Battery Capacity (kWh) / Consumption (kWh per 100 miles) × 100. Most EVs consume between 25-35 kWh per 100 miles under normal driving conditions.
Not all battery capacity is usable — manufacturers reserve a buffer (typically 5-15%) to protect battery longevity. Real-world range also varies with temperature, speed, terrain, HVAC use, and driving style. Highway driving at higher speeds typically reduces range by 15-30% compared to city driving.
