🌱 Grass Seed Calculator

Calculate pounds of grass seed needed for your lawn based on area and seed type. Covers new lawns and overseeding.

Grass Seed Rates by Type

Seeding rates vary significantly by grass type. Kentucky bluegrass: 2–3 lbs per 1,000 sq ft. Perennial ryegrass: 8–10 lbs. Tall fescue: 6–8 lbs. Bermuda grass: 1–2 lbs. For overseeding an existing lawn, use about half the new lawn rate. Always prepare the soil properly for best germination.

Lawn Seeding Tips

The best time to seed cool-season grasses is early fall (September). Warm-season grasses should be planted in late spring to early summer. Keep newly seeded areas moist (not soggy) for 2–3 weeks until germination. A starter fertilizer helps establish strong roots. Expect full coverage in 6–8 weeks for most grass types.
