🏠 Roof Pitch Calculator

Calculate roof pitch from rise and run. Get the pitch as a ratio, in degrees, and as a percentage.

How to Calculate Roof Pitch

Roof pitch is the ratio of vertical rise to horizontal run. It is commonly expressed as “X in 12” (e.g., 6:12 means the roof rises 6 inches for every 12 inches of horizontal run). To convert to degrees, use the formula: degrees = arctan(rise / run). A 4:12 pitch is the minimum for standard asphalt shingles, while steeper pitches shed water and snow more effectively.

Pitch Categories

Low slope: less than about 18.4° (less than 4:12). Conventional slope: 18.4° to 36.9° (4:12 to 9:12). Steep slope: greater than 36.9° (over 9:12). Building codes and material requirements vary by slope category.
