How to Calculate Soil Volume
Multiply the area (length × width in feet) by the depth in feet to get cubic feet. Divide by 27 to convert to cubic yards. Soil is sold in bulk by the cubic yard or in bags (typically 1 or 2 cu ft each). One cubic yard covers 324 sq ft at 1 inch deep, or 108 sq ft at 3 inches deep.
Soil Depth Guidelines
New lawn: 4–6 inches of topsoil. Garden beds: 6–12 inches. Raised beds: 12–18 inches. Top dressing an existing lawn: 1/4–1/2 inch. A cubic yard of topsoil weighs approximately 2,000–2,700 lbs depending on moisture content.
